With an OPICO Grass Harrow, leys can be re-vitalised and dry matter yields boosted. You can attach an OPICO Air Seeder, and oversow old worn leys to boost grass and clover content, or start afresh and put down a brand new ley with the harrow and seeder combination.

The OPICO Grass Harrow covers every inch of the ground, thanks to its unique contour flexing tine bed. It clears moss, opens the surface, improves aeration and encourages growth. Like all good ideas it is very simple and is now recommended by thousands of farmers who have switched to this common-sense approach to what used to be a ‘harrowing’ job.

The net effect is a more vigorous and re-vitalised ley, often appearing darker green thanks to the breakdown of the nitrogen cap on the soil surface which is made available to the grass.

• Clear out moss and trash clogging the base of the sward.
• Drag out shallow-rooted weeds like chickweed and annual meadow grass. 
• Open up the soil surface and let oxygen get to the roots.
• Release locked-up surface nitrogen to the growing ley.
• Break up and disperse clumps of slurry and muck.

The most important angle on the OPICO Grass Harrow is built into every tine. Firstly, its oil hardened spring wire has three times the service life of a normal sprung steel wire.

The tine itself has an effective angle, but the tines within the bed can be adjusted allowing for ten different tine settings depending on the work to be done.

48 tines per 1.5m bed with 30mm spacing creates more pressure per tine point and good self cleaning action. The tine uses a triple coil spring which increases vibration and improves the harrowing effect.

Typically used for reseeding and overseeding pastures, the pneumatic Air 8 (8 outlets) and the Air 16 (16 outlets) are usually fitted to an OPICO Grass Harrow.

Designed to accurately meter and distribute grass and small seeds evenly across the full width of the grass harrow which opens up the soil, creating a tilth for improved seed to soil contact. 

The seed roller metering is driven by a land wheel on the Air 8 and by an electronic GPS receiver on the Air 8E and Air 16E. The 8 outlet seeders have an electric fan whilst the 16 outlet has a hydraulic fan. Hydraulic fan upgrades are available for the Air 8 and 8E models.

The grass seeder seed rate can be varied from 1 to 80kg* per hectare, according to the type of seed being sown and whether reseeding or overseeding. Where oversowing only specific areas of a field, electronic seeders can also be switched on or off during the harrowing operation.

Sowing should always be followed with rolling to ensure good seed-to-soil contact is achieved.

The productivity of old or patchy leys can be rejuvenated and the life of the ley extended, simply by overseeding. This is especially useful where poor drainage or flooding has killed off grass in certain areas of a field, or where livestock have poached ground near gateways and troughs. In addition, the field does not have to come out of use.

With few effective clover-safe herbicides around, many farmers have adopted the approach of ridding the leys of perennial weeds like docks and thistles first, and only stitching-in clover once a clean grass ley has been established. Using the OPICO Grass Harrow, bare ground is exposed onto which the broadcast clover seed can land and establish.

Typically a first year reseed is expected to give 25% more yield than an old ley, although improvements of 40% have been known. Furthermore the modern grass varieties in seed mixtures have been bred to utilise nitrogen better, and have higher yields and digestibility than older grasses.

In soil conditions where it is difficult to establish new leys, aggressively cultivating the surface and heavily overseeding with a OPICO Seeder in consecutive seasons can give a reliable alternative.

 A high-output Grass Harrow and seeder, designed for large-scale farmers and contractors. The Grass Master consists of a heavy-duty harrow complete with levelling board, purpose-built to carry an Air 16E Pro Seeder.

The unit enables light cultivation and levelling to be carried out for complete re-seeds or over-seeding, with higher seed rates and faster working speeds than have been available up to now. The seeder has 16 outlets with hydraulic fan and 400-litre seed hopper. Other features are full in-cab electronic control plus variable seed rate on the move and radar.

For leys to reach their full potential for yield and quality, an integrated approach to grassland management is essential.

As well as harrowing, this includes: maintaining good drainage, avoiding soil compaction, reseeding with grass and clover mixtures appropriate to livestock and purpose, timely weed and pest control and tailoring fertiliser applications to compensate for soil nutrient shortfalls.

Grass is a very valuable crop and treating it as such can dramatically reduce seed costs.

Flexible bed

The flexible design of the tine beds allow them to follow the contours of the land ensuring effective coverage and even tine pressure. Each 1.5m bed has 48 tines spaced at 30mm centres apart and as well as ensuring good tine pressure onto the ground, this design allows it to self-clean as it moves through the sward.  

Spring tines

The Grass Master's spring tines are able to penetrate even the hardest of ground, ripping out dead thatch and opening up the soil surface allowing air in to the root zone to stimulate and encourage growth. The oil hardened spring wire has three times the service life of a normal sprung steel wire. Channel mounting of tine coil prevents damage to the growing tip and leaf of the grass. 

Adjustable tine angle

Quick and simple tine angle and pressure adjustment, ground conditions will determine how aggressive tine pressure needs to be for effective harrowing. On the OPICO Grass Master there are 10 tine angle settings so pressure can be altered, ensuring the vibrating action of the triple coil spring tine can be maximised. 

Hydraulic Folding system

When in the transport position, the Grass Master folds up to 2.8m. This allows easy transportation on the road and through narrow gateways. 

Hydraulic cylinder with accumulator and hydraulic shut-off valve can be locked for safe road transport.

Pneumatic Seed Delivery

Hydraulic drive units include a fan speed sensor and alarm to warn the operator if the fan is not turned on when seeding or if there is a malfunction.

Precise Seed Metering

Unlike most other types of seeders, the OPICO Air 16E Pro seeder uses individual metering seed rollers for each seed outlet enabling extremely accurate seed metering and guaranteeing the same amount of seed is fed to each outlet.

This is crucially important when using low seed rates and small seeds

Four types of metering rollers are available. Two of these quickly interchangeable seed rollers are supplied as standard - a coarse (green) seed roller and a fine (blue) seed roller. The third or fourth can be purchased as an extra.

Forward speed related metering

All OPICO Grass Master's come as standard with radar to give constant forward speed related seed metering. It doesn’t matter if you slow down or increase your speed you will always get the correct seed rate.

6m Grass Master

The 6m Grass Master comes in 2 variations - offered with either the option of 7mm or 8mm spring tines. Both variations include the below features.

The Sward Lifter is designed to alleviate compacted layers in the soil, opening up the subsoil to improve drainage and air interchange without significant damage to the productive sward. Waterlogged ground prevents grass growth and spring operations such as slurry and muck spreading, harrowing, fertilising and overseeding.

It also means livestock cannot be put out to graze which in turn effects forage requirements and productivity. The Sward Lifter, with its rugged construction, is specifically designed to break up hard pans and surface compaction while lifting and opening up the subsoil creating improved aeration and drainage.

The untreated area photo (before) shows the top layer of the soil is water logged. The compacted layer is preventing the water from passing though.

In the treated photo (after) you can clearly see the water has been able to penetrate through the top layer and down through the soil profile.

Sward Lifting prevents water logging in the winter and allows oxygen into the grass root zone. As the grass is not put under water logging stress through the winter it is able to take advantage of warmer days and starts to grow earlier in the spring.

Shearbolt & Auto Reset

Trailed Cutting Discs

The “opening” cutting disc is mounted on a spring-loaded trailing arm allowing it to trip out of the way of obstacles more easily. This cutting disc slices through the grass sward, preventing damage and soil burst on to the surface.

The cutting discs are bolted on to the frame allowing the operator to improve the alignment with the sward lifter leg. The bolted on trailed cutting disc can also be mounted in a high or low position to maintain maximum strength whatever the working depth, whilst the box section also allows space for a screw spindle depth adjuster which incorporates a depth marker scale for improved accuracy. 

Simple Depth Adjustment

All machines come as standard with a pin adjustment system to control the depth of the leg and the pressure on the rear spring-loaded press roller.

The depth adjustment system controls both the depth of the leg and the pressure of the spring-loaded press roller. Each roller is individually spring loaded to close the slot and level the surface.
